Malayali Garden

One of the unique ventures at Lakeside is the Kingston Malayali Association garden. This community group represents the south Indian Malayalee culture focusing community engagement and cultural enrichment, evolving to meet the needs of a growing membership. Through collaborative efforts and innovative approaches, members have remained committed to preserving their rich traditions and nurturing a strong sense of community spirit.

A highlight of KMA’s contributions is its involvement with the Lakeside Community Garden. In 2023, the group embarked on an exciting project to clear and cultivate a plot in the southeast corner of the garden. This initiative involved creating meandering paths and erecting a delightful archway for climbing plants, significantly beautifying the area.

The garden showcases a diverse array of crops, harmonizing popular staples with culturally significant varieties. Among the cultivated plants are hot peppers, ivy gourds, bitter gourds, and aubergines. Additionally, three pawpaw trees were planted, adding to the flourishing collection of this unique Carolinian species at Lakeside. The incorporation of colocasia leaves cultivation further enriches the garden, providing an additional layer of cultural significance and culinary delight.

Building on the successes of their inaugural year, this enthusiastic group continues to thrive, meeting every Friday for a potluck and socialization. These gatherings not only allow members to share fresh produce but also foster a deeper sense of community. Their dedication to physical health and sustainability is evident, as they regularly donate surplus produce to local food-sharing organizations.
